Director of Development

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

JOB SUMMARY

The Development Director (DD) leads the fundraising and communications team at Silicon Valley Children’s Fund (SVCF). He/she sets the strategic vision for the fund development department, and leads an exceptional team responsible for the agency’s fundraising and marketing activities. The successful candidate will forge new relationships and develop ties within the community to build SVCF’s visibility and financial resources. He/she will utilize creativity, a can-do attitude, and a deep commitment to our mission to ensure we make a deep and lasting impact in the lives of foster youth.

The DD will establish and implement the infrastructure needed to increase the organization’s operating budget (currently at $5.2M) through the solicitation of major gifts, corporate and foundation grants, and special events. S/he will expand and diversify SVCF’s donor base and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the DD will work closely with an engaged and influential Board of Directors.

The Development Director reports to the Executive Vice President. This is a full-time, exempt position located in San Jose. The essential functions are as follows:

Fundraising and Leadership

  • Actively work with the Executive Management Team and Board Chair to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy.
  • Research funding sources, build pipeline of leads, and employ “moves management” techniques to ensure organization successfully moves prospects into donors, and ultimately, into loyal supporters
  • As needed, write and/or edit funding proposals and reports
  • Supervise team members, and oversee relationships with any consultants hired to execute SVCF’s Development and Communications strategies
  • Identify and hire new staff and ensure professional development and effective mentorship of development staff
  • In support of Grants Manager, oversee quality and accuracy of all funding proposals and reports
  • Work in concert with the CEO, Executive VP and Board of Directors to deepen the Board's fundraising and evangelical role
  • Oversee all department activities related to ongoing day-to-day fundraising efforts including implementation of a donor relations and stewardship program; oversee gift processing, record keeping, and reporting

Strategy Development, Budget and Project Management

  • Align development goals with SVCF’s strategic priorities
  • Work in collaboration with the Executive Management Team to create a long-term sustainability plan for the organization
  • Monitor and report key fundraising deliverables and performance measures of the development program; present statistical analysis to Executive Management Team and Board
  • Stay abreast of trends in philanthropy to position SVCF ahead of major funding changes or downturns
  • Oversee improvements to systems infrastructure (e.g. donor database, email integration) to maximize efficiency of development and communications efforts

Marketing, Communications, and Event Management

  • Ensure all communications materials, both printed and digital, are effective and reflect a high-degree of quality and accuracy
  • Develop and delegate implementation responsibilities of a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
  • Oversee the details of annual fundraising events

Experience and Skills of Ideal Candidates

  • Development/Fundraising: Ability to construct, articulate, and implement both short- and long-term strategic development plans. Proven success in non-profit fundraising, with at least 5 years of experience in a leadership position
  • Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/board of directors
  • Marketing Savvy: Skilled at brand placement, market expansion, donor acquisition, and brand awareness
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones
  • Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences
  • Influencing: Gets others to accept ideas by using convincing arguments, creates a win-win situation and responds appropriately to key stakeholders
  • Relationship Building: Engages supporters, board members, corporate partners, and volunteers to build long-term relationships for the benefit of the organization
  • Collaboration: Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives; skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and externally
  • Commitment to Mission: Passionate about SVCF’s mission and vision 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree a plus
  • 5+ years of demonstrated success in the development function in an entrepreneurial, high-performing nonprofit organization and/or 5+ years of transferable, relevant sales and marketing experience in a for-profit setting
  • Experience with a youth development or educational organization is a plus
  • Knowledge of ethical behavior and business practices; ability to ensure own behavior and that of others is consistent with these standards and align with the values of the organization
  • Ability to use computers, especially the Microsoft Office Suite & Outlook, fundraising software & databases

PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The Development Director will spend time sitting and using office equipment and computers which requires the ability to see, stand, bend at the knee, move fingers and hands for typing, filing, and answering the phone.  There may be some lifting of office supplies and materials.  The incumbent should be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
